Outside with the kids: Making Bird Feeders

There are so many fun things to do with the kids outside in the summer, instead of them being trapped inside in front of the tele or on the computer! As well as going for bike rides, walking the dog, having a picnic and making a camp, creating bird feeders out of everyday cartons and bottles is a great way to teach kids about different types of birds and let them get creative!

There are many types of bird feeder, created using old cans, bottles, cartons and ribbon and also more artistic one off bird feeders using tea cups and coloured glass bottles! However, making a bird feeder with your kids is very simple, and there are two alternatives, either using a plastic bottle or carton or using ice lolly sticks.

Here is a fantastic way to create a bird feeder using your old plastic bottles, instead of throwing them away.
1. Firstly wash your plastic bottle or carton and make sure all the packaging and wrapping is removed.
2. Cut a hole in the side of the plastic bottle, large enough for birds to get at the seed, but insuring the seed won’t get wet in the rain and constantly fall out.
3. Make a few small holes in the bottom so that the rainwater can drain away.
4. Using strong string, make two small holes in the cap of the bottle and thread the string through, tying the end around a tree branch or washing line.
Watch which birds are in your garden!

Add holes for wooden spoons into your bottle for great shelves for the bird to perch on while getting some bird seed.

Another great way of making a bird feeder that the kids will love is by using lolly pop sticks.
Create a base and then layer the lolly pop sticks in a square around the base.
Use a larger stick as a perch for the birds and add string to hang! Voi la
Making bird feeders are such a great way to keep the kids entertained as well as teach them about the wildlife and birds in your garden.

Keeping fresh this summer is a must and there is nothing better than a healthy treat to keep you going throughout the day. Here at Ellie Ellie we love a good recipe. On a hot day, everybody reaches for the ice lollies to cool down, but instead of buying fabs, magnums and twisters there are so many recipes for homemade ice lollies that are healthy and easy to make for a bbq or summertime dinner party.

We have a delicious recipe of Summer Berry ice lollies for you to have a go at, they are easy and you only need 4 ingredients, perfect!

For this recipe you can use plastic shot glasses or lolly moulds. A great way to spend time with the kids this summer is making different flavoured lollies from fruit and berries. They can then eat what they have created!!

Let's Get in the Garden this Month!

Getting out in the Garden and planting new plants and vegetables is a great way to spend the day this summer, providing the weather holds out.

It’s really easy to grow your own vegetables and herbs, or if you’re after something more colourful, hanging baskets are a great way to inject colour into your garden or onto your patio.

Many vegetables require the right weather and humidity to grow well, so it is best to plant certain seeds in particular months, to make sure you get the best result.

It's best to plant these vegetables in August: spring cabbages, cauliflowers, autumn and winter lettuces, onions, radishes, shallots, winter spinach and turnips.

Here are some useful hints and tips for gardening this August:

Happy Gardening!

The Perfect Pimms

We all love a chilled, fruity glass of Pimms on a lovely hot day in the British summertime, so we thought a ‘Post about Pimms’ was a must at Ellie Ellie HQ, especially as we have been enjoying lovely weather recently.

This is a great guide to ‘The Perfect Pimms’ and we really love the way they guide you to cut the fruit… Pimms Perfection we say!!

Each sip of Pimms is savoured in the British summertime and it’s a lovely way to create summer memories with friends and family. The new ‘Blackberry & Elderflower’ Pimms flavour is another summer sizzler with a fresh and floral taste.

There are lots of interesting and yummy recipes around using Pimms as the main ingredient and we couldn’t be more excited at the prospect of tucking into a Pimms cupcake or sorbet. Enjoy this Pimms Sorbet with all the delicious ingredients of our beloved summertime drink…

Take a look at a recipe for scrumptious Pimms Sorbet here... Pimms Sorbet

Pimms winter means we can now enjoy the taste of cinnamon and caramel on the cold days too, lovely!
