Afternoon Tea for Two!

To make this Mother's Day extra special this year, i got in the kitchen to make my mum some yummy scones (her favourite). I wanted to prepare something nice for her and decided a tea for two would be perfect!

What are you doing this Mother's Day?

Before starting the scones i looked up an easy scone recipe and gathered all my ingredients, here is the recipe i used!

Start by getting all your ingredients ready, and all the equipment you need to for recipe, you will need scales to measure the flour, butter and caster sugar!

1. Start by measuring the flour and putting it in a large mixing bowl, and add the salt and baking powder!
2. Add in the butter, and rub it into the flour with your fingers until the mixture is like fine crumbs and stir in the sugar.

3. Put the milk into a jug and heat in the microwave until warm (not hot) and add the vanilla and lemon juice, set aside for a moment and put the baking sheet in the oven to warm.
4. Make a well in the fry mix and add the milk mixture and combine it quickly with a knife

5. Spread some flour onto your chopping board (or work surface) and tip the dough out, dredge the dough and your hands with more flour and fold the dough over 2-3 times until it's a little smoother.

6. Pat into about 4cm deep ready to cut

7. Take a 5cm cutter, with a smooth edge, and plunge into the dough to make as many scones as you can
8. Press whats left of the dough and spread out again to make some more from the off cuts

9. Brush the tops with the beaten egg and place onto the hot baking tray

10. Bake for 10 minutes until risen and golden on top - serve with jam and clotted cream!

Here are our finished scones, and they taste delicious! All ready for afternoon tea with Mum this Mother's Day!

My Visit to Borough Market!

Last weekend i went up to visit a friend in London and discovered a oasis of delicious food, drink and culture at Borough Market. Borough Market is just by London Bridge train station, and is thriving with food stalls and people milling around deciding which food to delve into next!

Deciding what i wanted to eat was a challenge, we walked around the market taking in all the lovely smells and the choice of food was amazing. There was everything from burgers, falafels, gluten free food, wheat free food to cheese, bread, pad thai, paella and much more (i could go on and on).

I finally decided on paella, one of my favourite dishes (i did spy some calamari being made on the same stall but had to resist) and it did not disappoint! I got a great portion filled with prawns, chorizo, squid and peas and it was delicious! I accompanied my paella with some homemade lemonade, which had just the right amount of zesty lemon flavour.

After filling my bag with tasty treats to save for later we sat down and took in the sunshine and atmosphere of the market, which is brimming with chatter and overall happiness. I didn't want to leave and wanted to try out more of the delicious food.

For a cheese lover this market is heaven too, with an array of stalls showcasing the best !

Interesting Facts about March

As we arrive March (can you believe how quick January and February have gone) we've found some interesting facts that maybe you didn't know about this month!

  • It is one of seven months that are 31 days long
  • March starts on the same day of the week as November every year, and February in common years only.
  • March ends on the same day of the week as June every year
  • The name March comes from the Latin Martius, the first month of the earliest Roman calendar. It was named for Mars, the Roman god of war who was also regarded as a guardian of agriculture
  • March was the beginning of our calendar year. We changed to the new style or Gregorian calendar in 1752, and it is only since then we begin the year on January the 1st.
  • All through lent the traditional games played are marbles and skipping
  • The last three days of March were said to be borrowed from April
  • One of the flowers most associated with March is the narcissus (Wild Daffodil)

'March winds and April showers
Bring forth May flowers.'

Who else has some facts about March?

Danielle's Map Story!

When i started making Ellie Ellie's Personalised Map Location Pendant back when i started the company, the first necklace i made was one for myself of Sussex. I really wanted a necklace with where i grew up and it was also a chance for me to create something for myself and see how it looked!

Sussex is the place where i have grown up and subsequently set up Ellie Ellie in 2010, so it's very special to me. I love everything about Sussex and it was a great place to grow up and set up my business. Ellie Ellie has a very strong connection to Sussex and our ethos of 'Re-design, Re-cycle, Re-love' is very much a part of our 'Sussex by the Sea' location!

What location did you get for your map pendant?

My Map Story!

Our Personalised Map Location Pendant is the perfect way to keep a special location and memory close to you. I chose Cornwall for my pendant as it is a place i have grown up, had long summer holidays and made great friends since i was little.

As well as enjoying summer long holidays near Falmouth in Cornwall as a child with my family and friends, i now visit with new friends and create new memories which i will continue to look back on! After living in Cornwall and spending so much time there you never tire of the surroundings and the views of the harbour and beaches. If you've never had a chance to go, it is really worth a visit, even if just for a long weekend!

Share your stories of why you chose your location for your personalised map pendant with us, we always enjoy reading our customers stories!

A bit of Milk, Eggs and Flour is all you need!

It's Pancake Day!! Also known as Shrove Tuesday this day is associated with the day preceding Lent because it meant you could use up rich foods such as eggs, milk and sugar before the fasting season of Lent for 40 days!

Pancakes are so easy to make and only use 3 simple ingredients, flour, eggs and milk. Simply put all of these ingredients into a bowl and whisk together until you get a smooth batter, cook your pancakes in a frying pan for 1 minute each side and serve them with an assortment of toppings.

Our favourites in the office are chocolate and strawberries, nutella and bananas and the favourite lemon, sugar and syrup!

What's your favourite topping?
